ONE-BLUE is pleased to announce its upcoming webinar “ONE-BLUE: Policy Recommendations & EU Marine Regulation Review”, reaffirming its commitment to protecting marine ecosystems and tackling marine pollution. This online event will bring together leading EU experts and institutions to discuss the latest policy developments and share recommendations from EU-funded projects featured during European Green Week. Participants will explore critical challenges related to marine pollution and examine policy briefs aimed at advancing a sustainable blue economy. Connecting Science and Policy for a Sustainable Future
The session will be welcomed by Anna Bobo, Senior Policy Officer of the C2 Unit (marine environment & clean water services) of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Environment (DG-ENV), will deliver an institutional address offering key insights into the EU’s current priorities for marine environmental protection and sustainability. María Martha Barroso Quiroga, Chemical Engineering Advisor at Finnova Foundation, will then present the latest updates and review EU marine legislation, regarding the work made in ONE-BLUE around this topic. Her contribution will be focused on an analysis of the legislative situation regarding the EU regulation on marine waters, focusing on some gaps that we have identified in the monitoring and control of contaminants of emerging concern.
In addition, the webinar will showcase the work of other EU-funded initiatives that are actively contributing to sustainable policy making and marine protection from different perspectives. Chris Bowler, Director of Research at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (BlueRemediomics project), will present their results concerning the disclosure of the origin of genetic resources on which patent applications are based on WIPO Treaty and the BBNJ Agreement. Priscila Doran, Vice-President of the Executive Council of NUCLIO, (OTTERS project), will explain how their project seeks to integrate citizen science into educational framework. Lisa Waldenberger, Scientific Project Assistant at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna (EcoDaLLi project), will explain their recommendations for the proper implementation of nature-based solutions.
Also, we will host some initiatives aligned with the European Green Week 2025. Robert van Spingelen, President of the European Sustainable Phosphorus Platform (ESPP) and representative of the UNEP uPcycle project, will explain briefly the main conclusions from the ESPP workshop celebrated from 10th to 12th June in Bergen (Norway), focused on nutrient management in aquaculture feed, seafood processing, and fish sludge valorisation. Davide Poletto, Executive Director of the Venice Lagoon Free Project and representative of SeaClear2.0 and REMEDIES project, will share the main conclusion of the Marine Litter Monitoring,Removal and Blue Circular Economy workshop celebrated in Venice (Italy) on June 1. In this case, Poletto will explain the main assets about this event that focused on showcasing innovative and sustainable methodologies, technologies, and solutions for the monitoring, removal and recycling of marine litter, particularly plastics.The session will be hosted by Jon Larratxea, communication officer of the project and at the Finnova Foundation.
