TU Delft brings ONE-BLUE’s updates on the study of contaminant dispersion to OCEANS 2025

Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), partner of ONE-BLUE, represented us in the OCEANS 2025 conference, which took place in Brest (France) from 16 to 19 June. Ying Ma, PhD student at TU Delft, presented the paper “An enhanced cell-based model for contaminant dispersion in marine environments”, mentioning our project. The paper was co-authored with Prof. Bart De Schutter and Dr. Meichen Guo.

This model contributes to a better understanding of the spatial and temporal distribution patterns of contaminants dispersion in the marine environment. The dispersion of the contaminants is one of the knowledge gaps ONE-BLUE is willing to close. The results derives from the cell-based model (CBM) will be inputs for the ONE-BLUE decision support system. This decision support system, based on machine learning and deep learning methods, will be developed for forecasting events and the combined effects of climate change and contaminants of emerging concern for supporting decision-making.

The OCEANS 2025 conference brought together scientists, engineers, policymakers, and industry leaders to showcase over 400 technical papers, exhibits, and workshops on marine technology, renewable energy, and digital ocean systems. Key highlights included initiatives on digital twins of the ocean, marine robotics, and solutions to ship-whale collisions, reinforcing global collaboration for sustainable and innovative ocean stewardship. ONE-BLUE’s presence in these spaces confirms the quality of our research, which is the key to understanding the presence of emerging pollutants in the marine environment and taking a step further in protecting the seas.
